Foreword of the Dean

The Faculty of Law, AUTh, organized from this academic year and on as the only one-School Faculty in our university, constitutes a historically rich academic unit which has contributed to the legal culture of Modern Greece, having included in its roster both Law academics and instructors experiences in the Law field.

The aim of our Faculty is to provide students with comprehensive education in the field of Law. Subsequently, students will become profound experts on the content and the methods for interpreting and applying Law, inspired supporters of Justice both in their private and in the public lives, conscientious citizens, responsible professionals and corruption-free administrators of public affairs.

The field of Law, as a social science, does not have strict specification borders, nor can it be classified as a black or white science. On the contrary, it operates by trying to establish positions based on criteria, and thus, is characterized by the constant need to make evaluative judgments. These decisions may sometimes lead to balancing conflicting interests between private parties and/or the state. Some other times, they may lead to accepting the conflicting rights of many partakers of law, and some other times, they may lead to seeking the most preferable solution between the one that is essentially the fairest and the one that is practically the safest. The basis for these verdicts lies in the most profound knowledge one can obtain by studying Law, which is the legislator’s evaluation, constituting the “telos” (purpose) of every Law and defining its regulatory range.

It should be noted, though, that in order for one to become proficient in the Law, as in any other field of study, they should go through a process that starts with receiving the proper instruction but is completed with their private study and profound consideration of the various scientific opinions that are expressed in their scientific field of study. Lectures constitute a collective act, whereas self-study is a private one, even reclusive to some extent. Both are imperative: The instructor does not, and cannot whatsoever, convey the complete knowledge of the course he/she is teaching. Instructors merely offer the necessary “keys”, in order for the students to be able to unlock and fully comprehend the vault of knowledge. If students attend the lectures without going through the self-study process, they will merely get the key but not the treasure. On the other hand, studying privately without attending the lectures will rarely be adequate: Much of the knowledge acquired will remain incomprehensible to the students, thus demoting the whole learning process to mere memorization.

This webpage aims to present the study program of the Faculty, in other words the courses offered and their contents, along with suggested reading materials. Also, it offers information about the main facilities that support the study program, such as the Library of the Faculty of Law and the computer and multimedia room and information about the Erasmus plus programs. Lastly, it provides information about the Faculty’s human resources, in other words, the Faculty members, and the other teaching instructors as well as the administrative personnel, so that the students will know where to address any problems they may encounter during their studies.
